Frequently Asked Questions
What is a DIY cremation or direct cremation?
Direct cremation is a simple, low-cost cremation that takes place without a formal funeral service beforehand. Many families around the world choose direct cremation and then hold their own personal memorial or celebration of life, using their own urn, keepsakes, and readings. Our products are designed to support exactly this kind of family-led approach, wherever you're based.
Do you ship worldwide, and how long does delivery take?
Yes, we ship internationally. Free delivery is currently offered to New Zealand, Australia, and the United States. We're also able to offer free delivery to most other countries, but shipping costs and timeframes vary by destination, so if you're ordering from outside NZ, Australia, or the US, please email us before you order and we'll confirm whether free delivery is available to your location.
Orders are typically dispatched within 48 hours. Delivery usually takes around 8-15 working days depending on the item and your location. If you need something urgently, contact us and we'll do our best to help.
Is it legal to keep cremated ashes at home?
In most countries, there is no law preventing a family from keeping cremated ashes at home - ashes are generally treated very differently to burial remains, and the decision is usually left entirely to the family. That said, rules and cultural expectations do vary by country, and in some places specific permits, religious requirements, or local council rules may apply.
New Zealand
No law prevents keeping ashes at home. The decision is entirely up to the family.
Australia
Keeping ashes at home is permitted nationwide, though a small number of councils or strata/body-corporate rules may have their own guidance for shared properties.
United States
There is no federal law against keeping cremated remains at home; regulation of cremation itself sits at state level, but home storage is generally unrestricted.
Everywhere else
Requirements can differ significantly from country to country. This page is general information, not legal advice - we'd always recommend checking with a local funeral director, council, or government authority in your country before making a final decision.
Are there rules about scattering ashes?
Scattering is generally permitted in most countries on private land (with the landowner's permission) and in many public or natural areas, but specific rules can vary by region, council, state, or protected/conservation land.
- New Zealand: Generally permitted, including on private land with permission; some regional parks, waterways, or Department of Conservation land have their own guidelines.
- Australia: Generally permitted with landholder consent; some states regulate scattering in national parks or waterways.
- United States: Generally permitted on private land with permission; national parks and many state parks require a permit, and scattering at sea is regulated by the EPA (typically at least 3 nautical miles from shore, with notification required).
This isn't legal advice - wherever you're based, we'd recommend checking with your local council, national park authority, or relevant government agency before scattering ashes, to be sure you're following the rules that apply in your area.
How do I choose the right urn size?
As a general guide, 1 pound (about 0.45kg) of body weight equals roughly 1 cubic inch of ash, and adult cremated remains typically weigh between 2 and 4 kilograms in total. Most full-size adult urns are built to hold around 200-220 cubic inches, so a standard-size urn suits most adults - if you're unsure, choosing a slightly larger urn is always the safer option. Keepsake urns hold a small symbolic portion of ashes, usually just a few tablespoons, so families can share remains between relatives or keep a small amount close while the rest is scattered or buried. Our product pages list capacity for each item, or you're welcome to get in touch before ordering.
What's the difference between a keepsake urn and a full-size urn?
A full-size urn is designed to hold the entire cremated remains of one adult. A keepsake urn is a smaller vessel that holds only a portion of ashes - often chosen when family members want to share remains, or when most ashes have already been scattered or buried and a small amount is kept as a memento. Keepsake urns are also popular as memorial jewelry-style items that can sit on a shelf or mantle.
Can ashes be shared between family members?
Yes, and many families choose to do this. You can use keepsake urns to divide ashes between relatives, or choose memorial jewelry so more than one family member can keep a small, personal portion close to them.
How do I choose jewelry for pet ashes versus human ashes?
The main difference usually comes down to design and sizing rather than the mechanism itself. Pet memorial jewelry is often smaller and more discreet, or shaped with paw prints or pet-specific motifs, while human memorial jewelry ranges from subtle pendants to more traditional keepsake designs. Both styles typically use a small sealed chamber to hold a pinch of ashes, fur, or cremated remains, so it really comes down to choosing a design that feels right for your loved person or loved pet.
Is memorial jewelry safe to wear daily?
Yes. Our memorial jewelry is designed for everyday wear and is securely sealed to protect its contents. For added peace of mind, some pieces can also be sealed with adhesive if desired.
Do you offer personalized or engraved products?
Some of our products can be personalized with names, dates, or messages. Availability varies by item, and details are listed on each product page.
What materials are your urns and jewelry made from?
Our urns are crafted from wood, ceramic, aluminum, alloy, and brass, depending on the style. Each material offers a different look and feel - wood and ceramic tend to suit a warm, natural aesthetic, while aluminum, alloy, and brass designs often offer intricate detailing or a more contemporary, durable finish. Our memorial jewelry uses stainless steel and sterling silver. Product pages list the specific material, dimensions, and capacity for each item.
Is the packaging discreet?
Yes. All orders are shipped in plain, unbranded packaging to ensure privacy and respect.
Are your products suitable for pets as well?
Yes. We offer a dedicated range of pet urns and pet memorial jewelry, designed specifically to honor companion animals with the same level of care and respect as our human memorial products.
Do I need to go through a funeral home to purchase these products?
No. You can purchase directly from us and arrange a memorial in a way that feels right for you and your family. Many people choose this approach for its flexibility, simplicity, and transparency.
